Mine rehabilitation

The NSW Government has strong laws in place to ensure that all land used for mining is rehabilitated for the benefit of future generations.

This page outlines mine rehabilitation requirements in NSW and the Resources Regulator’s role in ensuring mining companies comply with the law.

What is mine rehabilitation?

Ensuring land or water used for mining is made safe, stable and sustainable.

Rehabilitation framework

Mining companies have extensive mine rehabilitation obligations across the lifecycle of a mine.

Security deposits

Security deposits are in place as a last resort to make sure there are sufficient funds for mine rehabilitation if a mining company defaults on its obligations.

Rehabilitation compliance activities

The Resources Regulator proactively inspects mine sites to ensure rehabilitation is on track.
