Safety

Regulating for a safe and responsible mining, extractive and petroleum industry

Important change to compliance action

The NSW Mine Safety Inspectorate has commenced a process of following up all directions issued under S191 Improvement Notices. It has been discovered that some mine operators have not complied with S191 Improvement Notice directions, which has resulted in escalated action. Mine operators are reminded that it is a legal requirement to follow directions issued under notices from the Regulator and failure to do so may result in further compliance and enforcement action.

Report an incident or injury

If there is a serious injury or illness, a death or a dangerous incident, you must report it to us immediately by calling 1300 814 609 option 1 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). You will then need to log in to the Regulator Portal to access the incident lodged by the Resources Regulator and provide further information as required.

Mine safety regulatory activities

The Resources Regulator’s direction and priority areas over the next three years are outlined in the NSW Resources Regulator Strategic Plan 2021 - 2024 (PDF, 1.8 MB). The focus of the strategic plan will help ensure we achieve our vision of a safe and responsible mining, extractive, and petroleum industry.

By focusing on business improvement through a unified and integrated regulatory approach; and leveraging off strong industry engagement and partnerships, we are confident that we can deliver on our mission of enabling and supporting industry to understand and fulfil its obligations.

Incident prevention strategy

The Resources Regulator has implemented the Incident prevention strategy (PDF, 1.17 MB) in consultation with the Mine Safety Advisory Council and external industry stakeholders.

The strategy is underpinned by three key foundations:

  1. developing a risk-based intervention framework
  2. integrating human and organisational factors on risk management and reporting
  3. collecting and using robust and quality data to support the risk-based intervention framework.

The implementation of a scheduled and targeted safety assessment program for mines and petroleum sites is a crucial element in mine safety's implementation of the incident prevention strategy. Read more about the safety assessment program.
