Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified people for consideration for appointment as an independent member of the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board (Board).
About the Board
The Board is a statutory board established under the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013 (Act). The Board advises the Minister and the Resources Regulator in relation to:
- the setting of competence standards
- standards for assessing competence
- requirements for the maintenance of competence for persons exercising statutory functions at a mine or petroleum site that impact on the health and safety of any person.
The Board’s membership is made up of high-level stakeholders representing employers and workers within the industry and independent members with relevant expertise.
Role of an independent member
The role of an independent member is to provide expert assistance to the Board regarding competence standards, assessment of competence and requirements for the maintenance of competence for statutory functions in accordance with the Act.
Selection criteria
Applicants should provide a resume, details of 2 referees and evidence of how they satisfy the following criteria:
- proven judgement, objectivity, critical thinking and impartiality
- capacity to understand and manage conflicts of interest
- ability to contribute to the effectiveness of the Board and listen attentively to other's opinions
- ability to analyse information and make a constructive contribution to discussion
- significant professional expertise and judgment
- expertise in the development of competence standards and assessment of competence
- capacity to appreciate national developments in relation to competence.
The selection panel may also consider complementary skills including:
- knowledge of the development of training packages
- knowledge of university qualifications development
- use of technology in developing and maintaining competence
- capacity to pursue reform or improvement opportunities.
An independent member must be independent of mining industry stakeholder organisations and registered training organisations.
Experience in the mining industry, education or professional skills development would be beneficial but is not essential.
Remuneration and appointment term
The Board usually meets 4 times per year. A sitting fee of $500.00 per day is paid to independent members in accordance with the Public Service Commission’s Boards and Committees Classification Framework.
The appointment is for a term of up to three years.
A probity check of suitable applicants will be undertaken before appointment.
