Feedback on adverse vehicle interactions to determine regulation

The NSW Resources Regulator will use feedback on its Vehicle Interaction Controls in NSW Mines Discussion Paper to help shape its regulatory approach to vehicle collisions and near-misses at mine sites.

The Regulator received 33 submissions from a broad cross-section of the mining industry during a 6-week consultation period in July and August 2023.

A range of stakeholders provided feedback, from mining companies to industry associations to suppliers, representing all sectors, including coal, metalliferous, underground and open cut mines and quarries.

Adverse vehicle interactions are a key concern for the Regulator and have been the subject of several targeted awareness programs.

The discussion paper presented several pathways to help the Regulator determine its regulatory position on safety measures to reduce the number of collisions and near-misses being reported year-on-year.

These included continued industry engagement and potential legislative changes to adopt emerging proximity detection and collision avoidance technologies.

The Regulator will now develop a position paper on its preferred pathway and position to present to industry stakeholders in early 2024.
